The island has significant historical and cultural importance. It has fabulous walks, crystal clear water for swimming as well as great fishing and snorkeling. This is approximately a paddle of 4-5 hours depending on weather conditions- a distance of 18 kms.
We provide cross wind double kayaks or single. Necky kayaks. All safety equipment - PDF, spray skirt, split paddle, pump, flares and dry bags. Full safety briefing is given and it’s advisable to depart Paihia no later than 9am. Free vehicle and backpack storage available.

This trip is tide dependant and we strongly recommend landing 2 hours before high tide through to 2 hours after high tide.
Tides change daily so be sure to do your research before your departure. From leaving Paihia paddling distance is approx 4hrs to Waikare at a relaxed pace. From here to the beginning of the track is 5kms…
We will give you a lock and ask you to lock the kayaks to the wooden fence at the landing site at Waikare and the key to be placed inside the life jacket pouch.
Dan or Tony are happy to take your packs in our vehicle and meet you at the end of Waikare Valley Road where the official trail begins. It is an hours drive for us on treacherous roads so there can be delays but rest assured we will be there to meet you with your gear. It’s an easy paddle in mainly sheltered waters great scenery and bird life.
